Nuestro Canto "The Past in the Present Moment"
About the Event

Nuestro Canto will present "The Past in the Present Moment." is the name of their new work, where they go back thousands of years through a musical journey. Playing original replicas of the clay flutes that ancient cultures from Mexico used for thousands of years. Nuestro Canto brings back Flower and Song, ancient concept that talks about poetry, music, and dance being one element. Singing songs in different languages from Mexico, playing drums, and clay flutes will transport you to the Sacred Land of Mexico  Tenochtitlan.

About Gerardo Calderon

Gerardo Calderon is a composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Born in Mexico City. He grew up surrounded by music, dance and culture. Gerardo is the musical director of Grupo Condor and Nuestro Canto. While leaving in Mexico He studied classical guitar for few years at the Escuela Superior de Musica in Mexico City, before he discovered traditional Mexican music. Gerardo studied music theory at the Portland Community College in Oregon, and currently he is studying Music Therapy at Marylhurst University in Oregon. Gerardo has pursued his interest in traditional Mexican music, Latin American folk music and Pre-Colombian music by performing with folk ensembles in Mexico, Canada, New England, and the Pacific Northwest. He has also toured with choir and world music ensembles, and composed music and design sound for Ballet, documentaries, short films, commercials, and theater companies. Gerardo has been a teaching artist for 15 years and has continuously served the northwest community through Young Audiences of Oregon and SW Washington, Oregon Historical Society, Multnomah County Library System, and other cultural organizations. For the last couple of years Gerardo has been playing therapeutic music for Elder Facilities and Nursing Homes. Gerardo was honor to be part of the Circus Project Band as a Musical Director and performer. As a parallel activity to performance, teaching and studying; Gerardo is an instrument artisan; he makes custom pan flutes, rain-sticks, water drums, turtle boxes and bombos (bass drum). Most recently Gerardo launch his own record label Ollin Records, Where he promotes his music.

About Nelda Ryes

Nelda Reyes, from Mexico, is co-founder of Nuestro Canto, She has been a professional actress and educator from the last ten years and has specialized in physical theatre and in Latin American and Mexican cultural expressions. She holds a MA degree in Theatre Arts from Portland State University and also has studied in the Moscow Art Theatre School at Harvard University, with Luis de Tavira, and with Teatro LĂ­nea de Sombra in Mexico City. In addition to from her acting experience and education, she has studied language, literature, and classical and folk dance from different cultures, specifically those of Spain and the Caribbean. She has been a performer in ongoing projects at the Company of Theatre of the University of Guadalajara, assisted in the direction of diverse theatrical and opera productions in Mexico, and while in Portland, she has participated in several productions at PSU, Theatre! Theater!
