Annual Office of the Dead Concert
San Francisco Renaissance Voices annual Office of the Dead Concert this year commemorates All Saints Day with a performance of Tomás Luis de Victoria's (1548-1611) Missa O Quam Gloriosum (O How Glorious is the Kingdom Mass) including his motet of the same name upon which the mass is based. The mass will be performed alternatim style with hauntingly beautiful heavenly flights of solo chant between the mass movements. Unlike his more prolific contemporaries Victoria focused on composing music that was liturgical and devotional. This parody mass, written in the mixolydian mode, perfectly illustrates this and is considered one of his best being described by the British musicologist Donald Tovey as "one of the most perfect ever written." With guest conductor Don Scott Carpenter of American Bach Soloists.
