Adam Shulman Sextet
Adam Shulman has been a staple of the San Francisco Jazz scene since he moved to the city in 2002. Before the move, Adam was a student at UC Santa Cruz where he studied with the great pianist Smith Dobson and the trumpeter/arranger Ray Brown. He received his degree in classical performance under the tutelage of the Russian pianist Maria Ezerova. In August 2015, the Adam Shulman Sextet went to Fantasy Studios and recorded an album that was released on Origin Records in April 2016.

This group performs mostly original songs written by Adam Shulman with a standard or two thrown in. Much of the inspiration comes from the Jazz Messengers tradition in that there's an abundance of swing and a good dose of the blues. The alto replacing the trombone lends for a slightly smoother sound and a higher and often more crunchy harmony with lots of half steps between the horns. The idea was to create compositions firmly rooted in the bebop and post-bop tradition with a little bit of modern seasoning in the harmony.
