Gilbert Castellanos & Arlene Damasco Present: ART MEETS JAZZ, a new series featuring unique salutes to some of the greatest legends of jazz: Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and more! Southern California artists who support and capture the vibrant San Diego jazz scene utilizing various mediums - photography, watercolor, charcoal, pastels, sketch, etc. - will showcase their original work each night. This series will merge music and art to highlight multiple-perspectives, and the talented musicians, that create the heartbeat of jazz in Americas Finest City.
Leading the band is none other than virtuoso trumpeter and Downbeat Magazine American Master Gilbert Castellanos. Artistic Director of the San Diego Symphony's "Jazz at The Jacobs," Castellanos knows what it takes to make a jazz series a success. He has been a driving force in the San Diego jazz scene for over fifteen years. Gilbert is host to the city's longest running weekly jazz jam, is a renowned music educator and champion of the next generation of jazz, curating a weekly Young Lions Series at Panama 66/San Diego Museum of Art. He also serves as Artistic Director for the International Academy of Jazz and continues to find new avenues to keep jazz alive and well!
Legendary drummer Roy McCurdy, best known for playing with Cannonball Adderley's Quintet, will be hitting with Castellanos on this inaugural night of ART MEETS JAZZ! He also worked with Sonny Rollins, Betty Carter, Bobby Timmons and the Jazztet. Based in Los Angeles, the 80-years-young musician continues to perform and record with the biggest names in jazz.
Also part of the band - Christopher Hollyday on Alto Sax! He's headlined at the historic Village Vanguard in New York City, toured with Maynard Ferguson as a featured soloist in the trumpeters 60th Birthday Big Band, and recording the Big Bop Nouveau album. Hollyday toured with his own quartet visiting every Western European country, Brazil, Canada, and most of the United States and made four recordings for RCA records. He has been a dedicated music educator in San Diego for 20 years.
Dean Pop Pop Hulett, the line-up's upright bass player, started playing the double bass at the age of eight. In 2001, he had the pleasure of playing with such musicians as Mark Lomax, James Gaiters, Bobby Floyd, Edwin Bayard, Hamilton Hardin, Jerome Jennings and many others. Dean has also shared the stage with well-known musicians such as members of the Marsalis family, toured with Delfeayo Marsalis, Derek Gardner, Wycliffe Gordon, and can be found on recordings with Azar Lawrence and others. Locally you can catch him jamming with Gilbert Castellanos, Irving Flores, Rob Thorsen, Joshua White and more!
Pianist Sam Hirsh, an active member of the Los Angeles jazz scene, can be found playing at Southern California venues including: The Lighthouse Cafe, Vibrato Jazz Grill, Blue Whale, Beverly Hilton, The Westgate Hotel San Diego, etc. He has performed at LACMA Jazz Night, the Newport Jazz Party, Bach Dancing & Dynamite Society, the Watts Towers Festival and the Sound Room. Sam has had the pleasure of playing and working with renowned jazz musicians including Red Holloway, Tom Scott, Gilbert Castellanos, Albert Tootie Heath, Ralph Moore, Roy McCurdy, Katie Thiroux and more.
JANUARY 2017 FEATURED ARTISTS (More To Be Announced and will vary each night of the three-part series) - Robert Sanchez, Photographer Robert Sanchez, a native San Diegan, has been shooting the local jazz scene for years, gaining the trust of many who grant him coveted behind-the-scenes access; it has allowed him to capture deeper aspects of a musicians talent, thinking, personality, and passion for the music.
"Those that know me and have been following my photography know that the onstage moments are not my favorite shots to capture. It is all about the personal moment, recording sessions, 1:1. I have based my work off of Jim Marshalls stand on his work which is first and foremost about gaining the trust of the musicians. That is how you get the shot."
