Fill As Desired - Locaphonic presents Amy X Neuburg and Solstice - October 27 - JCCEB
ONLINE SALES HAVE ENDED.  PLEASE PURCHASE YOUR TICKET AT THE DOOR.

Locaphonic presents "Fill as Desired," a food and music event celebrating human creativity, community, and resilience. Composer Amy X Neuburg and the award-winning vocal ensemble Solstice will perform Neuburg's original song cycle, inspired by Jewish recipes collected and preserved by women imprisoned in Terezin concentration camp. Sung in Czech, German, and English, the songs evoke the determined spirit of these women, using culinary memory and fantasy to sustain hope. The music draws from Eastern European folk, German lieder, Weimar cabaret, and the avant-garde, using eight women's voices and electronic looping techniques to create a multi-layered, multi-language chorus.

Included in the evening will be an imaginative meal of Jewish California tapas, inspired by the recipes and prepared with organic, locally grown ingredients. (View menu at locaphonic.org/Events.html)

"Fill as Desired" is co-presented by the Jewish Music Festival (October 27th) and Brava Theater (November 10th).

Tickets for November 10th at Brava Theater are available at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/272352

Ticket price includes concert, dinner, and wine.
At the door: $45 admission

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Since 1996, nationally-ranked female vocal ensemble SOLSTICE has enthralled audiences with their technically precise and passionate treatments of music for women's voices. Solstice includes members Emily Bender, Becca Burrington, Lark Coryell, Krista Enos, Mari Marjamaa, Kim Warsaw, and Sara Webb-Schmitz. Each Solstice member brings her own musical tastes and talents to the group, which creates a diverse, dynamic repertoire. From medieval troubadour songs to contemporary pop, Solstice shares the music they love from around the world and through the ages. The septet has garnered awards including 3rd place in the 2007 Harmony Sweepstakes National Competition after placing first in the 2007 Bay Area Regionals. Becca Burrington's arrangement of Joni Mitchell's Blue won Best Original Arrangement at that event. Solstice also won a Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Folk/World Song nomination for their 2000 recording of Blood and Gold. They have released three CD recordings.

AMY X NEUBURG (composer / vocalist / live electronics performer) has developed a unique career bridging the boundaries between classical, experimental and popular music. Her 'avantcabaret' songs combine her interests in poetry and language, expressive use of music technology (with an emphasis on live looping) and exploration of multiple genres using the many colors of her wide vocal range. As soloist she has performed at venues as diverse as the Other Minds and Bang on a Can new music festivals, the Berlin International Poetry Festival, the Wellington and Christchurch Jazz Festivals (NZ), electronic music festivals, colleges, rock clubs and concert halls throughout the U.S. and abroad. As composer, commissions include works for voices and chamber ensembles, often with looping electronics (Robin Cox Ensemble, Present Music, Santa Cruz New Music Works, Solstice, Christchurch Arts Centre chorus), Her widely acclaimed song cycle The Secret Language of Subways for voice and cello trio has just been released on Paul Dresher's MinMax Music label. Amy has also composed extensively for theater and visual media, including Mondomedia's irreverent Piki & Poko web animations and numerous onstage collaborations with modern dancers. As vocalist, Amy has been featured in contemporary operas and recordings including works by Robert Ashley, Culture Clash and Guillermo Galindo. Throughout the '90s she sang and played electronic drums with her art-rock band
Amy X Neuburg & Men. Amy received degrees in linguistics and voice from Oberlin College and Oberlin Conservatory and an MFA in electronic music from the Mills College CCM.

LOCAPHONIC's mission is to connect Bay Area residents with local musicians, food, and culinary artists, promoting sustainable livelihoods for artists and farmers and uniting Bay Area communities through food and music.

Founded in May 2012 by Bay Area cellist and food lover Hannah Addario-Berry, Locaphonic was inspired by the "locavore" movement, which promotes the idea that eating locally-produced food supports a sustainable local food economy. By applying similar principles to the music world and encouraging collaboration between talented local musical and culinary artists, Locaphonic helps to sustain and strengthen the Bay Area's gifted music community.
