Kate Power and Steve Einhorn Benefit for Artichoke Music
A Musical Portland Romance Comes Full Circle
Twenty years after first performing on a stage they built themselves, Portland folk artists and former owners of Artichoke (1981-2007) Kate Power & Steve Einhorn will appear on the Artichoke Café stage to perform in full their new release, Portland Romance live with folk supergroup The Portlanders and other special musical guests. Ticket sales will go to Artichoke Musics current fundraising campaign Changing Key: New Space, Same Heart to support its relocation from its current site on SE Hawthorne Blvd after the recent sale of the building. Tickets are offered on a sliding scale of $25-50 and can be pre-purchased at Brown Paper Tickets by clicking on the icon on this page.
We are thrilled Kate & Steve are returning to their Artichoke roots for this special and important event. The magic of the music that takes place in the café has touched a countless number of audiences at this point, and this show will truly celebrate everything our café has become over the years.
In addition to debuting their new CD release, Kate & Steve have graciously donated a special guitar to be raffled off at the show. During his time as Artichoke owner, Steve had the opportunity to donate a guitar to young Zimbabwean musician Crispin Mungure, who, in turn, gifted Steve a guitar he made from found materials in his village. This guitar resonates with the history and the spirit of Artichoke Music and will be a true gift for its lucky recipient! All are welcome to enter the raffle: tickets can be purchased in the store starting January 17, where the guitar will be on display. You can also buy your tickets at the show, before the drawing at intermission.
We strongly recommend you pre-purchase tickets through Brown Paper Tickets, as seating is limited. Unable to attend? Support Artichoke by tuning in to watch on Concert Window, a streaming service that allows users to be a part of the audience right from their own homes! Can you help us even more? Gather your friends to watch the show together on Concert Window from wherever you are and make it a fundraising party! (How-to guides are available from our School Director, Avery Hill, at school@artichokemusic.org.)
All ticket sales, Concert Window contributions, and additional donations will be dedicated to Artichoke Musics fundraising campaign Changing Key: New Space, Same Heart. Every effort counts - we thank you for joining us!
More about Kate & Steve
This event promises to close an important circle in Steve & Kates journey with Artichoke Music. Over 25 years, they nurtured what was a small instrument store into a thriving community, moving it to its Hawthorne location and building a performance space used for open mics, coffeehouse shows, and featuring performances by local and traveling folk musicians.
Since leaving Artichoke in 2006, Steve & Kate have continued spreading the gospel of music, as performers and teachers. They have appeared as special guests on Garrison Keillors A Prairie Home Companion and locally at Portlands annual Winterfolk celebration in 2015. They also founded the Ukalaliens Songbook and method for teaching beginning musicians, which has put 45,000 miles on the odometer since 2009.
