About the Event
We kick off the 2017 Peña Flamenca series at Artichoke Cafe with Barcelona born bailaora Verónica Medino Cano's solo show! Recently relocated to Portland, OR, Verónica's energy and passion for flamenco is contagious. With Elisa Rocha (cante), Brenna McDonald (guitar), Nick Hutcheson (percussion), and Nela McGuire (palmas), we hope you'll join us for this exciting evening of flamenco!
About Verónica Medina Cano
Verónica Medina Cano was born in Barcelona, Spain and holds a degree in Spanish Dance and Flamenco from the Conservatory of Barcelona. She has trained at the Escuela Amor de Dios school with teachers like María Magdalena, Adrián Galia, Cristóbal Reyes, Tomás de Madrid, Manuel Liñán, Carmen La Talegona, la Truco, Rafaela Carrasco, Antonio Canales, Merche Esmeralda, Belén Fernández, David Paniagua, Rafael Amargo o Javier Latorre among others. She began her professional performance career in 2004 with the show Somorrostro under the direction of Javier Latorre. At the end of 2004 she joined Manolo Nuñez Ballet on a tour through northern Italy with the show Contrastes. In 2005 she moved to Madrid to continue her studies and joined the company Antonio Márquez Company, where she danced in El Sombrero de Tres Picos y El Bolero de Ravel. In 2006 she settled in Barcelona and joined the Gran Palace Ballet Hall and shows in Lloret under the direction of Manolo Nuñez. She danced at the Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona during 2006-2007 season in the operas Manon Lescaut, Boulevard Solitude and Manon. In mid-2007 she joined the Palacio del Flamenco flamenco show in Barcelona with the Ballet Manolo Nuñez. In 2012 she began teaching at the Centro Cultural Estrellas Altas in addition to weekly different cultural events in Barcelona with the rumba music group Sabor de Gracia. She settled in Amsterdam in 2013 where she joined the faculty of the flamenco dance school Flamencoamsterdam and where she continued her artistic career developing performances, courses and collaborations around the Netherlands. In 2016 she moved to the US where she lives and where she continues her career. Her performance is characterized by injecting traditional moves with bold theatrical flair, this Spanish dancer brings flamenco thrillingly up to date.
