Paufve | dance presents: XO East Bay
Shawl-Anderson Dance Centers Dance Up Close/East Bay, and Paufve | dance present the East Bay premiere of XO, an evening of new solo and duet works by Randee Paufve and Collaborators. Presented as a diptych, XO is composed of two, large-scale collaborative projects: XY, four collaborations with male artists choreographers/performers Todd Courage, Eric Kupers, Nol Simonse, and dancers Andrew Merrell, and Rogelio Lopez, and XX, a series of solos created by artistic director Randee Paufve in conjunction with female artists  choreographers Randee Paufve and Daria Kaufman; dancers Juliana Monin, Crystaldawn Bell, and Anna Greenberg, and vocalist Erin Dare.

The project asks: What do the categories of men and women mean in a society that, on the one hand, has begun to accept an explosion of non-binary identification, and on the other hand, still depends on that binary to maintain a variety of inequities? How can contemporary choreography reconcile gendered power dynamics in dance within a broader politics of intersectional feminism and the undoing of gender? Created under the influence of and in immediate contact with gendered bodies, XO serves as a microcosmic study in how we push against, struggle within, and further shape gender politics today.
