Still Alice
On Sunday, January 22nd at 2 pm, the Plaza Playhouse Theater presents Still Alice, starring Academy Award Winner Julianne Moore, as a benefit screening for the Carpinteria Alzheimers Support Group.
Moores performance of Alice Howland, a renowned linguistic professor who is diagnosed with Early-onset Alzheimers Disease, garnered her the Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA Award and the SAG Award, all for best performance by a female actor in 2015. This masterful story, based on the book by Lisa Genova, shows what so many families face as this terminal degenerative neurological ailment slowly progresses to an inevitable conclusion. Along the way, we see Alice struggle not only to fight the inner decay, but to make the most of her remaining time to find the love and peace to make simply living worthwhile.
Alec Baldwin, Kristin Stewart, Kate Bosworth, Shane McRae and Hunter Parrish portray her family members who also struggle to support Alice and each other as this disease slowly progresses.
Proceeds from this special screening directly benefit the Carpinteria Alzheimers Support Group. Founded in 2007 by Donnie Nair and Nola Ferguson, the CACSG exists in order to provide emotional, social and practical support for individuals who are caring for a loved one stricken with Dementia.
They also provide information and support to help the caregiver deal with the stress and daily difficulties associated with the various Dementia diseases (Alzheimer's, Picks Disease, Lewy-Body Disease, etc). Members of CACSG are currently giving or have given care to husbands, wives, fathers, mothers and other loved ones who are suffering or have suffered from Dementia.
Dementia is an umbrella term that describes various conditions, the best-known of which is Alzheimer's. Those affected may undergo moderate to severe changes in personality along with memory loss, irritability and exhibit other traits, some of which can be unsettling for caregivers. The disease can progress rapidly in some and requires increasing care on the part of caregivers to deal with the increasing physical and mental changes. CACSG is dedicated to providing compassionate help through their own personal experiences and the coping tools they found most useful along the difficult journey with a loved one.
CACSG is not affiliated with any national or regional organization so it must rely solely on individual and corporate assistance.
Tickets are $10.00 per person, general admission, all ages and seating is limited. Purchase online now at plazatheatercarpinteria.com, at Seastrand at 919 Linden Ave. (cash or check only) or at the theater box office starting at 1 pm on January 22nd.
