Eyes Of My Mother
One horrific act forever alters a young womans life on a farm. We follow Francisca, a surgeons daughter, from this traumatic event to an isolated adulthood, as she seeks to fulfill her parents legacy in increasingly gruesome ways.
Shot in crisp black and white, the haunting, and at times disturbing, visual compositions of The Eyes of My Mother evoke its protagonists isolation and illuminate her deeply unbalanced worldview. Genre-inflected but defying categorization, writer/director Nicolas Pesces assured feature debut allows us only an elliptical presence in Franciscas world, guiding our imaginations to follow her into peculiar, secret places.
I spent the runtime in a state of near-constant anxiety, waiting on bated breath for the next nightmarish jolt. A.A. Dowd, AV Club
One of the best movies we saw at Sundance. Picture the famous painting American Gothic. Now imagine that, just below the frame, a young woman is sawing the elderly couple's legs off, so that they'll never, ever leave her. David Fear, Rolling Stone
Shockingly original. Francisca is a movie monster for the ages. Equal parts Ingmar Bergman, Tim Burton and Tobe Hooper. The discovery of this years Sundance Film Festival. Eric Kohn, Indiewire
