Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Fareed 'n his Funk Bros.
"Fareed 'n his Funk Bros." featuring Fareed Haque, Guitars, MigueldelaCerna , Keys, Alex Austin, Bass and Greg Fundis, Drums. "Fareed and his Funk Bros." is the acoustic jazz version of Fareed's electronica band Mathgames! While MathGames employs Machines, technology, loops and Signal processors, Fareed and his FBs replaces all of that with human musicians. For this startling new concept, Haque uses all human musicians - with fingers - to create the sounds normally created by robot funk music machines. The new CD is entitled RumbleTrain, and will be released this fall on Harmonized Records.
"Fareed Haque is a modern guitar virtuoso, and will perform with drummer Greg Fundis and bassist Alex Austin. Fareed, steeped in classical and jazz traditions, has a unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation. Born in 1963 to a Pakistani father and Chilean mother, Fareeds extensive travels, with especially long stays in Spain, France, Iron, Pakistan, and Chile exposed Haque to different musics from a very early age. This natural eclecticism has become the hallmark of Haques music, but it was repeated visits to Von Freemans Chicago jam sessions that gave Haque the grounding in the Chicago blues and jazz tradition. The 1981 recipient of North Texas State Universitys Jazz Guitar Scholarship, Haque spent a year studying with renowned jazz guitarist and pedagogue Jack Peterson. Fareeds growing interest in the classical guitar led him to transfer to Northwestern University, where he completed his studies in classical guitar under David Buch, John Holmquist and Anne Waller.
