Brown Girl Surf End of the Year Celebration & Art Auction
Beat the election blues with music, hula, and the magic of ocean loving female empowerment! Join BROWN GIRL SURF on December 9th at Eastside Arts Alliance, 2277 International Blvd. for an end of year celebration and fundraiser! The event goes from 7-11 and will feature musical guests Coco Peila and Babii Cris. Hula will also be performed by Janice Staab with an end of the night cypher.
Headliner Coco Peila is a Feminist/Panther/Hip-hop Heroine from the Bay Area, extending African diasporic experience through the form of hip hop and soul music. Since being a National Slam poetry champion in 2005 , she has performed internationally at venues such as: The New Parish, The San Francisco Opera House, The Beehive, Yerba Buena Center For The Arts, Teatro Nacional de Guatemala, New Zealand's Hope Brother's, opening for artists such as Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Zion-I, J.Rocc.
A silent auction highlighting mixed media works from local artists and valuable gifts from local businesses will begin at 7 and end with a raffle at 9:10pm. Raffle items include swag from Prana, Olukai, Traveler Outdoor store and more.
General Admission Tickets are $25, with a sliding scale option. We will have light refreshments donated by local food businesses and beer for sale, donated by our friends at Queers Making Beers.
BROWN GIRL SURF works to build a more diverse, environmentally reverent, and joyful womens surf culture by increasing access to surfing, cultivating community, amplifying the voices of women of color surfers, and taking care of the earth. Founded in 2011 by Farhana Huq, Brown Girl Surf is a community of women and girls united by their love of the ocean. Brown Girl Surfs programming arm, started in late 2014 by Mira Manickam, empowers women and girls to develop their own connections with the ocean while exploring the coast and learning the art of surfing. With 2 years of programming completed, Brown Girl Surf has established five distinct Mind-Body-Ocean Programs, a growing Community Conservation program, and conducted dynamic collaborations with artists and filmmakers that support the voices of female surfers of color. Brown Girl Surf and our crew of young surfer girls has been featured on KQED Arts, has participated in panels at the Aquarium of the Bay and the New Parkway Theater. Their short film The Surfer Girls of India, received over 4 million views when it was picked up by Upworthy.
