An Evening with Michael McDonald - SOLD OUT
Saturday, December 17 at 8 pm we present "An Evening with Michael McDonald", a special benefit concert for the Plaza Playhouse Theater, with special guest Amy Holland.
A Grammy award winning singer and songwriter, Michael began his career as a studio musician in Los Angeles. In 1975, he joined the band Steely Dan as a background singer and keyboardist. In addition to his work with Steely Dan, McDonald began playing with the Doobie Brothers in 1975 as a temporary replacement for singer Tom Johnston, but stayed on as a permanent member. During this time with the Doobie Brothers, Michael recorded hits including It Keeps You Runnin,, Takin It to the Streets and What A Fool Believes, which garnered he and co-writer Kenny Loggins, Grammy Awards for Song of the Year.
After the Doobie Brothers disbanded in the early 80s, he continued to perform and collaborate as a solo artist, releasing his first solo album If Thats What it Takes in 1982.
McDonald has enjoyed a long and successful career due to his versatility and ability to work with a wide range of artists. In 1991, he released "Ever Changing Times" with Aretha Franklin. He received two Grammy Award nominations in 2003 for an album paying tribute to the Motown sound of the 1960s and '70s. He has also continued to tour sporadically with Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers.
Michael's life and works have been dedicated to creating wonderful and timeless music. Now his efforts have been nominated for the prestigious award of being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2016.
The December 17th concert will include some holiday favorites as well as some of Michael's iconic tunes. The special evening will also feature music by Amy Holland.
Amy Holland was honored with a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist after her debut self-titled album. The single, How Do I Survive, soared into the Top 20 on the Billboard charts and put Amy on the map. It was ten years prior that she came to Los Angeles as a teenager to exploit her singer-songwriter skills. Fortuitously, she met then piano accompanist Michael McDonald, who was later to become producer of the hit LP alongside Patrick Henderson, making her a household name and a few years after that, his wife. And now she's back with a new studio album aptly entitled, Light on My Path, produced by award winning Fred Mollin (Dan Hill, Jimmy Webb, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Mathis, Billy Ray Cyrus and Miley Cyrus). It highlights her fluid and melodic style which will please country, jazz, blues and pop fans alike. In addition to the up-tempo first single Walkin on a Wire, which grabs you on the first chorus, the album features several sure-to-be classic ballads including Prove That by Me, a duet with Michael McDonald. Friends who contributed background vocals on the CD are David Pack (Ambrosia), David Crosby, Joseph Williams (Toto) and son Dylan McDonald. Amy co-wrote Impossible Love and Light on My Path on this record.
All proceeds from this special benefit concert go to support the ongoing efforts of the Plaza Playhouse Theater, which will celebrate its 89th Anniversary in 2017.
