Helga Fanderl: Serendipities for Peter Hutton
Los Angeles Filmforum presents
Helga Fanderl: Serendipities for Peter Hutton
Thursday, November 17, at 8:00pm
At Echo Park Film Center, 1200 N Alvarado St, Los Angeles, CA 90026

With more than 1,000 remarkable films in her oeuvre, Berlin-based filmmaker Helga Fanderl makes a long-overdue first-time visit to Los Angeles to present two personally curated programs of her exquisite Super 8mm films for Los Angeles Filmforum.

The sheer quantity of Fanderls filmography directly parallels the depth and focus of her practice as well as her tirelessly keen eye for the intrinsic poetry of the everyday world around her and her own subjectivity within it.  As she gathers, forms, and ultimately shares her subtly powerful and purposefully silent cinematic refrains, one has the feeling of being given a treasured glimpse into a secret, jewel-like world of profoundly personal vision, marked by gorgeous, intuitive camera work, a painterly sensibility, and an expressive poetry of form.

In keeping with her unique artistic practice, Helga Fanderl has curated two completely personalized programs for her Los Angeles visit, and she will present, discuss, and project her films especially for the occasion.  With support from Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts, Filmforum is bringing Helga Fanderl to Los Angeles for these two programs of rare and exceptional beauty and her visit should not be missed!

Like a sprawling catalogue of brief glimpses of beauty, Fanderls filmography is diaristic to a degree (though worlds away from home movies) as it traces the peregrinations of the artist, revealing an interest and passion for certain visual motifs, textures, and movement, but also place.  [Fanderls] extremely short, silent, and in-camera-edited Super 8 films are evocatively composed of the present moment. They breathe, and appear effortless, despite the substantial labour and determination with which they are imbued. Resulting from a sustained, concentrated, and, at times, trepidatious engagement with the world, Fanderls artmaking is refreshingly modest, focused, and, above all, open. Eschewing precision and polish, though still structured and skillful, her films depict a startling intimacy. Whether capturing the fairy-tale fits and starts of young French girls playing in a park wearing red and royal blue Sunday dresses (Mädchen, 1995), closely observing a tray of glassware on a ship as the sea reflects and refracts through their crystalline shapes (Gläser, 2011), or following at close range the semi-circular motion of a handsome, pacing leopard, its spots evoking rhythmic patterns through Fanderls intuitive shooting process (Leopard, 2012), the artist fully gives herself over to the present moment and allows us to bask in it. - ANDRÉA PICARD, Cinema Scope, Issue 55, Toronto, 2013.

Tickets $10 general; $6 for students/seniors; free for Filmforum members. Available in advance from Brown Paper Tickets at XXXXX or at the door.
