Max's Midnight Kitchen
On Saturday, December 3rd at 7:30 pm, Tompkins Corners will present Maxs Midnight Kitchen, a nationally touring string band based out of Northern California. Their sound is characterized by the songs of Matt Takiff (acoustic guitarand fiddle) and Daniel Nickerson (banjo and electric guitar), whose music combines old-time folk, bluegrass, and country themes with a healthy dose of modern surrealism and humor. With harmonies fleshed out by Hannah Rosencrans (vocals and foot percussion), Max's Midnight Kitchen travels as a trio and brings their peculiar picking and singing with them wherever the go.
Matt and Daniel met in Portland in 2010 with a tenor saxophone in each of their hands, and have been playing tunes together ever since. After early shows with as many as 10 people in the band, MMK eventually slimmed down to a quartet, featuring Justin Eubanks on mandolin and Elliot Kuhlman on upright bass. 2015 found Matt and Daniel touring the west coast as a duo, where they stopped in at Coyote Hearing Studio in Oakland to record an EP, Travels with Blake, that featured playing by Bay Area musicians Erik Yates (Hot Buttered Rum), Jan Purat and Alex Bice (Steep Ravine). Later that year, Daniel relocated to Arcata, CA, where he met soon-to-be MMK member Hannah Rosencrans. A new full-length album, Max In Retrograde, was recorded in 2016 at the Red Lantern Studio in Portland and the Sanctuary in Arcata, with the support of David Allred, Alex Bice and Jeff Wilson (Steep Ravine).
Tompkins Corners Cultural Center (TCCC) is located at 729 Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley, NY. Tickets are $10.
