The San Jose Youth Symphony's Philharmonic Orchestra, under the artistic leadership of Music Director and Conductor Yair Samet, presents its 2016-2017 Season Opener to be held on Saturday, December 3, 2016, at 4:00 pm at the California Theatre, 345 S. 1st Street, San Jose, CA 95110.
The program will open with the ever-popular "Die Fledermaus Overture" by Johann Strauss, and conclude with Ravel's most-famous work, "Bolero." This concert will also showcase the first of several winners from the 2016 Young Artists' Competition, proudly sponsored by the San Jose Symphony Foundation. Outstanding young soloist, Luis Lechuga, clarinetist, will be performing Debussy's "Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Orchestra." Luis is a student at Valley Christian High School in San Jose, and is a member of SJYS's Philharmonic Orchestra.
The San Jose Youth Symphony (SJYS) is one of the oldest and finest youth orchestras on the West Coast of the U.S. Founded over six decades ago as part of the former San Jose Symphony, SJYS has a rich tradition of musical performance and education.
The mission of SJYS is to give young people a foundation for life through orchestral music. We create programs that assure young musicians achieve technical proficiency, musical knowledge and an emotional connection to music. We strive to make each performance for the community uplifting, spirited and exciting.
Today, SJYS comprises 480 member musicians, ranging in age from 8 to 20, and are chosen from over 650 applicants through our annual auditions. The SJYS comprises 11 distinct performing ensembles: two full orchestras; a chamber orchestra; two flute choirs; two string ensembles; concert winds, saxophone, percussion and harp ensembles.
The Philharmonic Orchestra is its premier ensemble, performing regularly during the season and embarks on biannual international summer concert tours, with its next Tour in Summer 2017, to the Adriatic and Central Europe (Croatia, Austria and Hungary). The orchestra has traveled in previous tours to other parts of Europe (most recently to Spain and Portugal), Asia, and South America.
