With "Emma" By Howard Zinn, New Suit Theatre releases our fourth main stage production! We chose this play, because of how it speaks to our mission, and a quote from Howard Zinn summarizes that perfectly: "I can think of few things more important than the situation of the United States today, than to bring the word, the spirit, of Emma Goldman to an ever larger number of Americans."
The play dramatizes events from the life of the real Emma Goldman and was written using Goldman's autobiography, correspondence between Goldman and fellow anarchist Alexander Berkman (Emma's lover, who also became a character in the play), and other research.
The play shows the period of Goldman's "nonviolence and resistance to militarism", rather than her earlier "attachment to violent revolution". After someone accuses her of plotting to "blow up the fleet" in San Francisco harbor, she declares "Bombs are not my way", but she "would be happy to see the fleet sink to the bottom of the sea ... so that we, and our brothers and sisters in other countries, can live in peace."
It will be presented at the Side Project Theatre, 1439 West Jarvis Avenue Chicago, IL 60626 OCT 13 - NOV 4 Thurs - Sat 7:30 Sundays 3:00
ABOUT NEW SUIT:
New Suit is an all volunteer organization. None of our staff is paid during regular business duties, or during production runs. We put our entire budget towards an engaging and entertaining experience for our audience. 3 years ago, after the run of our first production, JedIraq, we were able to use raised funds and ticket sales to pay off all start up debt and show-related expenses. We consider this a great success for the company and for that production. Through donated funds and ticket sales, we are able to bring these stories to life. About 65% of our budget goes towards renting a performance space. The rest is used for set materials, props, costumes, and renting sound and lighting equipment. Donations in the past have allowed us to pay for our show programs and other print material. We have also been able to purchase scenic elements that we will be able to use in future shows. Our goal is to be able to increase our budget so that we can eventually pay first, our actors, directors, and show crew, who put forth the energy to entertain and educate our audiences every night our shows are up. Second, we will pay ourselves. Without donors, theatre in Chicago would simply not exist. We would not be known for our "store front" theatre companies, or our vibrant and brave new works, which many other cities do not get to experience. Donors are a valued and loved part of this theatre community. Our staff and volunteers simply can't do for our theatre what donors are able to do, and we are extremely thankful!
