The Free Sound Ahn-somble
The Free Sound Ahn-somble is Tenth Interventions inventive and improvisational septendectet under the direction of composer Dorian Wallace. Utilizing a roster of illustrious musicians from the New York City jazz community, The Free Sound Ahn-somble combines elements of classical avant-garde, spontaneous improvisation, and big band jazz to offer a new take on creative and improvisational music for the 21st century.
The Free Sound Ahn-somble's Commissioning Project engages composers in the contemporary classical and avant-garde genres to write new works for large jazz ensemble. The artistic goal of this initiative is to expand the repertoire and genre of music written for big band and to foster dialogue across multiple disciplines. As part of the project, jazz musicians teach contemporary classical composers about improvisation, free jazz, and the big band idiom, while composers challenge and test the sonic and soloistic limits of the ensemble and it's musicians.
