"Marley was dead, to begin with" and what happens to Ebenezer Scrooge's mean, sour, pruney old business partner after that? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He's even given his own private tormentor: a malicious little hell-sprite who thoroughly enjoys his work. Desperate, Marley accepts his one chance to free himself: To escape his own chains, he must first redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey of laughter and terror, redemption, and renewal, during which Scrooge's heart, indeed, is opened; but not before Marley in this irreverent, funny and deeply moving story discovers his own. (Dramatists Play Service, NY)
It's been ten years since this production was seen in the northwest Ohio. Actor Tom Hofbauer thought that the time was right to revisit this unusual take on the traditional "Christmas Carol" story by Charles Dicken. He contacted Bill Quinlan, the original director for the Toledo run of this show, and asked if he wanted to bring Jacob Marley back to a Toledo stage for an encore presentation. Bill, not wanting to upset the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, agreed.
Under the direction of Quinlan with Hofbauer playing all the roles on a minimalist stage at the Maumee Indoor Theatre in this celebration of Christmas, audiences will be transported to Victorian England to see "the other side" of this holiday classic.
Be sure to save the dates, Friday, December 16th, Sunday, December18th, AND Tuesday, December 20 for a journey with old Jacob Marley as he tries to save Scrooge's soul.
