EXO//ENDO
EXO//ENDO features Andrea Youngs voice-infused electronics, Michael Days prepared turntable (modified turntables with unorthodox styli, merging acousmatique with gestures of experimental turntablism) and Braden Diottes electric bass (an expressive and dynamic feedback system) to produce a multimedia work that focuses on the release and absorption of sound.
While in Victoria the EXO//ENDO ensemble will host a workshop on Thursday November 24 at 7 p.m. at Open Space, and then perform a concert on Friday November 25 at 8 p.m. at Metro Studio. The workshop will focus on improvisation techniques and will will include demonstrations of electronics for voice and prepared turntables. The workshop is open to all and those with instruments are invited to bring them along.
Fridays concert explores the dynamic relationship between voice and technology where sound is the furnace and the fuel for expressions of internal desire or external wrath. For the entire performance, the voice is embedded in electronic sound like an organ working within the body, adjusting and adapting to the body of sound emitting from the ensemble. Beginning with miniature microphones inside the singers mouths, the vocal processing evolves into a hypnotic chant. Relying heavily on the physicality of sound, the middle section builds a wall of sound that is as physically intense as fire while the final movement is composed by the movement of drifting smoke and ash.
The concert will also include new works by John Mutter (BC), Erin Gee (QC), and Ulrich Krieger (DE/USA).
