Convergence Dance Theatre's DEVIATE
DEVIATE promises an evening of dreamy surrealism, taking you to new and sometimes bizarre places. This year's diverse collection of new choreography examines the power literal and abstract stories can capture our inner landscapes. New choreography by Jennifer Shannon and Kristen Padden with featured performers Malia Yamamoto, Meghen McKinley, Megan Inada, Marisol Garcia and new CDT company members Christina Comfort and Lorenzo Acosta.
DEVIATE premieres three new pieces, Easy Day, The Builders and Deep Divide as well as a restaging of the featured collaborative company piece, What's in a Name, which premiered at Honolulu Fringe Festival 2011. The edgy, raw piece is as much visual and performance art as it is dance. The haunting childhood chant, "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me." echo throughout the piece. We all know the saying and maybe you've even said it once or twice over the years. But just how much truth actually exists in that simple little phrase? What's in a name? is a collaborative piece that weaves together a kinetic story about defining our identity through cultural, social and political labels. In traditional CDT style the piece offers a blend of dynamic athletic dancing with unexpected moments of tender intimacy. What's In A Name? pushes buttons and boundaries for both the dancers and the audience alike using thought-provoking movement generously sprinkled with sweet and salty humour. The collaborative collection of choreography is created and performed by Jennifer Shannon, Megan Inada, Meghen McKinley, and Kristen Padden of Convergence Dance Theatre.
