Honor. Heal. Organize. Whats Next for Cascadia Climate Collaborative?
Since the last CCC gathering we've seen an upswell in floods, fires, heatwaves, and melting ice, positioning 2016 as the hottest year on record. As Bill Mckibben recently wrote in the New Republic, In the past few months alone, our foes have used a firestorm to force the total evacuation of a city of 90,000 in Canada, drought to ravage crops to the point where southern Africans are literally eating their seed corn, and floods to threaten the priceless repository of art in the Louvre."
In December of 2015 world leaders gathered at COP21 in Paris to sign a historic climate agreement. While hailed by some for reaching the most ambitious regulatory framework to date, the agreement still falls massively short of what is truly needed for a sustainable, livable future.
At the same time, activists around the world have taken even bolder steps against Big Oil and Gas, often putting their bodies on the line to awaken the world to climate catastrophe. Locally, they have scored major victories, stopping mega projects and raising awareness:
-Kayaktivists took to the water in Washington and Oregon to protest Shells Arctic oil exploration;
-#BreakFree actions against Shells oil-by-rail expansion project in Anacortes, WA drew thousands of people in the largest anti-fossil fuel demonstration in Washington state history;
-The Lummi Nation invoked treaty rights with the Army Corps of Engineers to oppose a coal export terminal at Cherry Point in Bellingham, WA with the solidarity of a coalition of organizations and thousands of people.
Thanks to #blacklivesmatter, #standingrock, and other people of color-led movements, national conversations about environmental justice have been elevated like never before. As an organization dedicated to fostering emotional and psychological resilience for a livable future, CCC remains committed to anti-oppression work. Both the crises we face, and the resistance we cultivate, require strong ties, deep connections, and broad collaborations. What then does the current moment require of CCC?
Here's where you come in.
We are having a special retreat of CCC stakeholders and we'd love for you to be there. The goals of this intimate gathering will be several fold, but central to our agenda is determining the next phase of CCC and clarifying personal commitments to the organization.
As is true of all CCC gatherings, we will provide space for healing and reflection, as well as honor our past work together (in other words, party!). We hope you can make it.
