Cooperatives - a Foundation for New Economics
Dr Adotey Bing-Pappoe will argue that there are important advances in technology that are making a cooperative and sharing economy easier to achieve. There is also a growing awareness of the potential of cooperatives as a way of economic organising, and a rising tide of cooperative formation around the world (USA, UK, Greece, Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, Uruguay and India).
However, the world is not moving effortlessly towards a cooperative commonwealth. A cooperative outcome is only likely to be achieved if it is struggled for. Cooperatives provide greater scope for human agency and creative potential, are more equitable in the social consequences, and are more democratic. In addition, they perform as well as non-cooperatives in many of the usual metrics of economic performance.
Dr Adotey Bing-Pappoe, is a Lecturer in International Business and Economics at the University of Greenwich. He has also been Director of the Africa Centre, Economist in the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture in Zambia and Consulting Editor for Africa Books.
