The Physicists is a darkly comic satire by one of the worlds foremost German dramatists and author of the internationally acclaimed The Visit. First performed in Zurich in 1962, The Physicists tells the story of the Johann Wilhelm Mobius, the worlds greatest physicist, currently living out his days in a madhouse where he is haunted by visions of King Solomon. He spends his days with two equally deluded scientists one who believes he is Einstein, the other, Newton. Add to this treacherous combination the world-renowned psychiatrist-in-charge Mathilde von Zahnd, who has diabolical plans of her own, and havoc ensues. The Physicists probes beneath the surface of modern existence and questions whether it is the mad who are truly insane.
The New York Times described The Physicists as continually intriguing and entertaining...bursting across the stage like firecrackers...
