At Slow Food Seattle's panel on The Future of Food this January, Slow Food USA Executive Director, Richard McCarthy, introduced Dr. Stephen Jones, director of WSU's The Bread Lab, as a system disruptor who changes how we eat. As The New York Times Magazine cover story described, The Bread Lab's mission is to make regional grain farming viable once more, by creating entirely new kinds of wheat that unite the taste and wholesomeness of their ancestors with the robustness of their modern counterparts.
We're thrilled that The Bread Lab will be hosting Slow Food Seattle for a tour of their new facility in Burlington, home to a grain science lab, milling lab professional kitchen and the King Arthur Flour Baking School. We will also visit with two of their local grain partners, Skagit Valley Malting and Chuckanut Brewery.
The tour will be on on Saturday, November 5, from 10:30am-12:30pm at The Bread Lab, at 11768 Westar Lane, Burlington, WA, 98233.
Agenda: 10:30 - Arrive at The Bread Lab for a presentation by TBL and King Arthur Flour. Sampling of fresh milled whole grain baking and milling demonstration. 11:30 - Tour Skagit Valley Malting. 12:00 - Tour Chuckanut Brewery (Note: We're going to their new location next to The Bread Lab, which is not reflected on their web site. Here's an article on the new site.
Chuckanut does not have a kitchen but they may be able to bring their food trucks. Please let us know if you're interested in food options when you sign up.
