In the month of John Cage's 100th birthday, "Trees and Branches" explores the legacy of Cage through the music of Californian iconoclast composer Arthur Jarvinen and performances by TempWerks, an ensemble originally created by Jarvinen to play his latest electroacoustic works.
Consisting of four accomplished LA-based composer-performers (Casey Anderson, Scott Cazan, Isaac Schankler, and Andrew Tholl), TempWerks deploys lofi, homemade, obsolete, and "non-musical" electronics like Geiger counters, strobe lights, radios, and telegraph keys alongside current digital technology, as well as acoustic instruments including violin, saxophone, and accordion.
The concert also features new pieces by TempWerks members, a new arrangement of Cage's rarely performed Imaginary Landscape No. 1, and Cage's gorgeous In a Landscape performed by Brazilian pianist Rafael Liebich.
Program:
John Cage - In a Landscape (1948) for piano Arthur Jarvinen - Nuclear Hoedown (2010) for Geiger counter, violin, and digital signal processing* Jarvinen - Slide Show (2010) for four channels of audio playback* Jarvinen - Blinded by Enlightenment (Again) (2010) for four amplified strobe lights* Anderson, Cazan, Schankler, Tholl - New works (2012) to be announced from the stage** Cage - Imaginary Landscape No. 1 (1939) for 2 variable-speed turntables, frequency recordings, muted piano and cymbal
