I WANT MY NAME BACK (OAKUFF 2012)
Saturday September 29th, Humanist Hall, 6:00pm
I WANT MY NAME BACK (93 mins) Directed by Roger Paradiso What artist, musician, or group marks the beginning of rap? The answer is not easy. While the answer must acknowledge DJ Cool Herc, and Gil Scott Heron, it is universally accepted that rap achieved mainstream recognition when the Sugarhill Gang released their hit "Rapper's Delight" in 1979. Would you believe Master Gee and Wonder Mike the creative leaders of the group and first great popular representatives of the most important musical invention of the 20th century were robbed of their rightful success, livelihood and even their name? Follow their story as they tour the world and follow up with songs like "Apache" and "8th Wonder." Thirty years after their historic recording, Master Gee and Wonder Mike come back to reclaim their names.
