Busted City is a provocative story set in Chicago during the 1983 Democratic Mayoral Primary. This hard-fought election pitted incumbent Jane Byrne, the first woman to be elected to any major political office in Chicago history, against the favorite son of many, Richard M. Daley, and strong black candidate and eventual winner Harold Washington. Sporting honest and often brutal dialogue which isn't cleansed or sugar-coated, and characters who are neighborhood people a mail man, a bartender, a cop and a retired cop, a guy who runs a hot dog stand. Their interpretation of the impending election, which a black man stands a strong chance of winning, exposes both the soaring and exhilarating hopes of one side and the uncertainty and worries of others who fear the Chicago they know will be lost forever. Theo is the Greek-American bartender (Guy DiBenedetto), who runs a bookie operation out of his neighborhood bar. He is mentored by Jimbo (Michael Byrne), a South Side Irish cop who is now retired. Their bagman is Al (Tony Pulgine), a South Side Italian cop who is nearing retirement. Theo's brother Johnny Jr. (Nick Leininger), is a gay man who runs the hot dog stand next door. Ace (Arch Harmon), is a black mail carrier and regular bettor at the bar who hopes Chicago is on the brink of making history. Directed by Stefan BrĂ¼n and produced at Fullers Pub by Prop Thtr, this is a Chicago story that speaks to today, with its bought out politics and extremist divisions, loud and clear.
