Tuxedo Man
"Nick Sands, a fictional jazz singer of yesteryear, comes to life in this one-man show written and performed by Zack Hoffman. He makes a convincing character study of Sands with a performance that takes place before, during and after one nightclub gig. The first segment moves slowly as Sands prepares to go on stage and talk about the history of the tuxedo, but Tuxedo Man becomes interesting once Sands belts out songs like Sinatra's "All the Way." Hoffman's voice and the physicality of his performance are impressive. He is a jazz singer, and the sweat and exhaustion on his face after his performance aren't feigned. Sands tells stories from his heyday. While his anecdotes are amusing and at times moving, it's the singing that makes him materialize as a character." Roxanne Macmanus, Willamett Weekly.
