Lichens and Mosses of the Pacific Northwest
We are excited to welcome lichen and moss specialist Phoebe Goit to the island to introduce us to the world of lichens and mosses. This will be a half day workshop where we will learn about lichen and moss biology, ecology, and identification.
Phoebe will start with an optional exploratory walk at Agren Park from 11:30-12:30 to look at moss and lichens in the field and collect interesting specimens to look at under the microscope later. We will then go inside from 1-4 pm where Phoeb will give us a one hour talk on mosses, a one hour talk on lichens, and a one hour practicum where we will look at mosses and lichens brought in from the field.
This workshop is unique in its combination of regional expertise with local knowledge. Phoebe will add to her usual regional information by bringing in specific information about island species. She has participated in all 5 Vashon Nature Center BioBlitz events as our Lichen and moss expert and has generated an island checklist of over 90 species that will be shared with participants. A checklist like this is a very rare gift and something that most places in the PNW do not have.
Participants are encouraged to bring in lichens and mosses from their own property for the practicum session. We will learn how to identify these organisms.
Workshop runs from 11:30-4 Saturday November 5th. We start with an optional exploratory walk from 11:30-12:30 at Agren Park to see lichen and moss in the field. The remaining part of the workshop will be held at the Land Trust building 10014 SW Bank Rd from 1-4 pm.
After this class your eyes will be opened to a whole new fascinating and beautiful micro-world. And you will have made a host of local friends that will gladly explore it with you.
