Jaill, Fergus & Geronimo
Jaill is a garage/psych-pop trio from Milwaukee mixing acerbic, darkly humorous lyrics with extremely catchy guitar hooks. Now with their second Sub Pop release out, Traps, the group's oddly dyspeptic yet upbeat flavor of indie-rock hits its stride, a quirky midwestern take on the fuzzed-out genre. Fergus & Geronimotake a most left-of-center approach to their songwriting, promiscuously drawing on soul, pop, proto-punk, and psych influences in songs that address such topics as "aliens, technology, intergalactic dating/hooking up, the Roman Empire, and the earthling resistance movement." The band's second full length, Funky Was The State of Affairs, bounces from Booker T-styled soul to early 80s New York dance rock with an immodest ease.
