The Spolin Players
If you can only see one Comedy Improv show, come to the source The Spolin Players.
From the LA TIMES: "Improv as pure and unpredictable as you will find."
We are The Spolin Players, a multi-talented ensemble of seasoned professionals; our members work regularly in theater, television, film and radio. We are fans, students and friends of Viola and her work. In fact, our troupe is the last to actually have been directed by the legendary "godmother of improv" herself, Viola Spolin.
In 1963, Viola published Improvisation for the Theater. Spawning the popular, ongoing world of improv, her pioneering work changed entertainment and American theater forever. Viola Spolin originally started developing theater workshop exercises to nurture spontaneity and encourage intuition in her students and hopefully create a little magic along the way. Now, 50 years later, that MAGIC is still known as SPOLIN GAMES! No sets, no props, no costumes, yet you will see and hear all three.
We invite you to join us for an evening of SPOLIN GAMES. The art of "being present in the moment" and "trusting one's instincts" are at the heart of what makes good live theater so transporting. Let The Spolin Players take you there! We want to make sure these amazing theater games are experienced and played by a whole new generation.
Even in this era of incredible clones, there still "ain't nothin' like the real thing!" And there's only one place to see THE REAL THING: "An Evening of Spolin Games."
Returning to the Lyric Hyperion Theatre Cafe with "An Evening of Spolin Games" on November 12th, for one performance only. We'll be sharing some new games and the venue offers beer and wine.
DRAMALOGUE says: "What sets this feisty, quick-witted group apart is the exuberance, speed, off-the-cuff brilliance, and dazzling interaction of its players. Riding perilously close to the edge of chaos, they overcome any skepticism with the hilarity, and often amazingly adept interplay they bring to their work. The vicarious thrill for the audience is the excitement of being won over by a trapeze act performed without a net, by an outstanding ensemble of players."
