LIVE from SAC: The Music of Mali with Yacouba Sissoko and LUMA

The LIVE from SAC program continues with the return of Yacouba Sissoko along with the world funk band LUMA, together forming a music collective performing traditional music of Mali as well as music rooted in the funk and groove tradition. This collaboration came to life in 2014 and they have performed together with great success, constantly evolving their eclectic musical vocabulary. The concert will be a unique experience and an opportunity for the local community to hear authentic Malian music, storytelling, and funky grooves.
Performers include Yacouba Sissoko on Kora, Dan Lauter on Sax, Jeff Marshall on Bass, Claes Brondal on Drums, and vocalist Natu Camara.
Yacouba is in demand as one of the best Kora players in the world, performing with jazz, Latin and R&B bands, as well as traditional African songs. In addition to performing as a soloist and with his band SIYA, he has toured with a variety of well-known artists including Regina Carter, Baaba Maal, Rachel Brown, Kavita Shah, Kakande, and Roberto Fonseca. Yacouba has also recorded with Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Abdoulaye Diabate, and Ami Koita.
LUMA, which stands for Life, Unity, Music, Amplified had much success in the Hamptons from 2003- 2007, playing at high profile events like James Beard Chef and Champagne, The Hamptons Classic, Pacific East Restaurant, numerous private parties, and then carried continued with appearances in NYC where they won a Starbuck sponsored best original band contest in the village, competing against rock bands. They performed at the Blue Note and Summer Stage, and one of their recorded singles, Ever So Slow, was picked up for an XM Radio summer ad campaign.
The concert will be recorded live for The Jam Session Radio Hour to be aired on local NPR affiliate WPPB 88.3 FM.
