Cantata Misericordium - Cantata of Mercy
In the year 2013 The Seattle Choral Company celebrates the 100th birthday anniversary of the famed English composer, Benjamin Britten. Britten composed the Cantata Misericordium in 1963 for a performance in Geneva, Switzerland, celebrating the centennial of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Latin text relates the parable of the Good Samaritanreflecting the mission and purpose of the Red Cross, and is poignantly relevant today.
Paired with Britten's short masterpiece will be two exhilarating companion works by a rising star in the choral world Ola Gjeilo (pronounced "YAY-low"). Inspired by the grace and passion of a mystical text by St. John of the Cross, Gjeilo's music offers intense dramatic exchanges between choir, piano solo, and strings.
