AUP's Our Town
Acting Up Productions (AUP) will present the first production of their 2012-2013 Season of Discovery: Our Town, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, from September 21-30, 2012 at the HJ Ricks Center for the Arts in Greenfield.
Our Town is a three-act play by American playwright Thornton Wilder. It is a character story about an average town's citizens in the early twentieth century as depicted through their everyday lives. Our Town has been adapted numerous times for radio, television, film and even opera. In 2003, a film adaptation starring Paul Newman as the Stage Manager earned him both an Emmy and SAG award nomination.
The story is narrated by the Stage Manager who acts as a guide for the audience throughout the play. In Act One, he introduces audience members to the 1901 town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire and the daily lives of those who live there, including Dr. Gibbs, his wife Julia and their children George and Rebecca and Editor Webb, his wife Myrtle and their children Emily and Wally. Act Two takes place three years later and focuses on the love and marriage of George and Emily, while Act Three is set 9 years after Act Two and centers on death and eternity.

AUP is excited to present Our Town as the first large production in their home base of Greenfield under the direction of AUP artistic director, R. Brian Noffke. Noffke's last turn on the HJ Ricks stage was in 2009 as director and leading role "Tevye" in Ricks-Weil Theatre Company's Fiddler on the Roof (and consequently where Noffke and his future business partner, Elizabeth Williams, first met.)
Our Town will be presented at the HJ Ricks Center for the Arts, 122 West Main Street, Greenfield, September 21, 22, 28, 29 at 8:00 p.m. and September 23 and 30 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets go on sale August 27th and will be $12 reserved and $15 at the door.
