Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards
The New Revival Coffeehouse will present the all-female string band Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
Cellist Valerie Thompson (cello/voice), fiddler Jenna Moynihan (fiddle/voice), and bassist Natalie Bohrn blend their sophisticated string arrangements and rich vocal harmonies with band leader Laura Corteses poignant and powerful singing.
The four young musicians bring their music school training to writing and performing contemporary music in the indie folk, Americana, and singer-songwriter arenas. The four voices are just as much instruments as they are providers for lyrics and harmony. At times it's rowdy, delicate and cinematic.
The result is a sound that can start as a string band, and morph into a string quartet, female a cappella group, or indie band; all while staying honest and true to their identity as folk instrumentalists.
Watching them on the main stage at a summer folk festival, or tearing it up late-night at a club, you get the sense that they might snap some fiddle strings or punch a hole in the bass drum. This is post-folk that seriously rocks.
"Powerful, gutsy and almost certainly going to make musical waves." fRoots Magazine
"A beautifully-constructed amalgam of traditional and contemporary country music." Americana UK
