AACE Seattle Section September 13th, 2012 Meeting
EAST LINK LIGHT RAIL OVER THE I-90 FLOATING BRIDGE
Presented by Mr. Paul Cornish, PE PMP
The East Link Project is the Locally Preferred Alternative (LPA) that extends the current light rail system an additional 18 miles from Downtown Seattle to Mercer Island, Bellevue, Overlake, and Redmond in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. The connection between Seattle and Bellevue is made via Interstate 90 (I90). The Project includes 12 stations, 4 park-and-rides, and supporting facilities. The project also includes storage tracks and facilities located just north of the Hospital Station to allow for overnight storage of vehicles and daily startup operations.
The project is in Final Design Phase, its estimated project budget is $3.8B, and it is scheduled for completion in 2023.
This presentation will provide an overview of the entire project including scope, work-to-date, and challenges ahead. It will then focus specifically on the track design and installation associated with the floating bridge section of the project, which is a one-of-a-kind application in the world.
