Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR)
Classes meet: September 20 & 27; October 4, 11, 18, 25, November 1, 8 Additionally, one long session will be held on Saturday, October 27 from 1- 6 PM at Peconic River Yoga Studio in Riverhead.
Free Orientation: September 13, 12:00 pm -1:30 pm MBSR is based on a practice known as mindfulness, a specific way of paying attention in the present moment. Scientific studies have shown that mindfulness training can reduce stress, improve attention, mobilize inner resources that improves psychological coping and physical health. Training includes: Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices Gentle stretching and mindful yoga Group dialogue and mindful communication exercises Guided meditation CDs and handouts A Retreat Experience
Instructor: Nina Thorne (ACSW) is a licensed clinical social worker with 28 years of professional experience. She is a trained family therapist who has worked in a variety of clinical settings. Later in her career she was appointed as Director of Pupil Personnel Services at a Long Island Public School and subsequently served as Instructor in Community and Human Services at SUNY, Empire State College for 14 years.
At Empire State College, Nina developed and taught academic courses on the undergraduate level. Motivated by her personal meditation practice, she integrated mindfulness-based theories and practices into the curriculum and taught, among other courses, studies in Stress Management and Adult Learning, Creativity and Mindfulness, the Psychology of Mindfulness, and Meditation and Mindfulness. Nina has presented several workshops to faculty to facilitate the integration of mindfulness-based activities across academic disciplines. She currently is available to offer faculty and staff training in mindfulness in educational settings.
Since completion of training through the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Nina is teaching MBSR and mindfulness-based meditation classes on Eastern Long Island.
A certified yoga teacher since 1978 and a Qi Gong student under the guidance of Master Chen Wei Gun, Nina has been practicing Vipassana meditation for many years.
