More disgusting luxury from Qabalala!
Qabalala! qollective presents Django Django's Dave Maclean on Sunday 16th September at The Third Door in Edinburgh from 10pm to 3am.
Just days ahead of the band's debut US tour, Django Django's principle sonic architect and DJ will be spinning his neo-psyche sounds in a rare Scottish club date. He brings the same madcap funk maximalism to his deejaying that he has to the band's certifiably dynamite debut album. The sleeve namechecks influences as diverse as The Beatles, Devo, Link Wray, Throbbing Gristle, AC/DC and Monty Python. "We've got Buddy Holly next to Outkast next to Public Enemy to Pink Floyd next to jungle and techno from the 90s and loads of Jamaican music," he says.
But alongside his sussed eclecticism, he has an unerring ear for dancefloor dynamics. This isn't just retro stripmining of failed youth subcultures: there's a genuinely unique creative synthesis here. His mixcloud strand is billed as The Out Sound from Way In, a homage to avant garde Sixties duo Perrey & Kingsley whose frankly bonkers work with tape loops, found sounds and other analogue electronics is a touchstone.
Plus there's a live performance by buzz Edinburgh art-rockers PET. Formed from the nucleus of cult outfit Action Group, the shifting line-up is anchored by frontman Pete Boggon's evocative lyricism, Dylan Mitchell's solid rhythmic pulse and Alexa Hare's hip electronic shimmer. The press including the NME has given the group big licks but they say it best themselves: "A lot like you have put your head in a vat of molten sound. The noise dribbles in your aural pathways and tingles and tickles your synapses. Imagine a fetish party with people who get their rocks off playing notes into your soul and laughing and cavorting while you lie in helpless ecstasy."
Also presenting Qabalala! house band The Cosmic Dead. This lawless tribe of Glasgow-based cognitive dissidents and sonic outlaws generate an imposing space rock sound that achieves moments of near total transcendence and oceanic grandeur amid the hard-tripping Kosmische chaos.
Here's what The Skinny said about them: "A half hour of uninterrupted, free-flowing stoner majesty with four band members so involved in their art that they might well have been playing in outer space for all they notice the open-mouthed cluster of spectators blown like trees in a gale before some utterly huge riffs."
Plus more jams from Qabalala! resident Ray Gun, mind-bending visuals from Diane Edwards and other assorted commodity fetishes.
More Qabalala! Christmas party coming soon.
