The Runners in Concert
Balagan Theatre proudly presents the workshop premiere concert of THE RUNNERS, created in collaboration by local teen theatre star Bryan Gula and Balagan artistic leaders Jake Groshong and Matt Smith.
THE RUNNERS is a unique collaboration between Gula, a recent Gig Harbor high school graduate and rising star on the Seattle theatre scene; and Balagan's Executive Director Jake Groshong and Literary Manager Matt Smith, who have mentored Gula throughout the musical development process.
THE RUNNERS is Balagan's first foray into theatre education, and strongly aligned with our mission to foster the next generation of both theatre-goers and theatre-makers.
Directed by another Seattle musical theatre wunderkind, Brandon Ivie, THE RUNNERS will be presented in musical concert format (much like the Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Concert), featuring actors at microphones, performing scenes and songs in costume and in character.
Set in 1929 the height of Prohibition and the Roaring Twenties THE RUNNERS is a swashbuckling musical dramedy featuring existential pirates, speakeasy dancers, Al Capone, and more. Captain Mark McCoy smuggles whiskey to New York from the unlikeliest hotbed of crime, the French island of Saint Pierre. There he finds 18-year-old James, a newbie to the rum-running game. James gets in over his head, getting in a fight with Charles Lindbergh and running rum with notorious gangsters - all while being chased by the bumbling and nasty Temperance Union.
