Cape Breton Fiddle Workshop with Troy MacGillivray and Barbara MacDonald Magone
The Scottish Fiddlers of L.A. are pleased to present an afternoon fiddle workshop with Troy MacGilivray. The celebrated fiddler and pianist hails from Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Canada, where his family are acknowledged as Gaelic tradition-bearers, and he can boast a clutch of honours including the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, which he was awarded for his contribution to Canadian culture. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn some tunes in the Cape Breton style and to absorb the rhythms, swing, fingered embellishments and bowing techniques used by the local musicians that make people want to stay on the dance floor until the wee hours of the morning.
Troy will be joined by Barbara MacDonald Magone on piano. Although born in Detroit, Barbara, the daughter of the late John A. MacDonald, a Cape Breton fiddler and founder of the Five MacDonald Fiddlers, was raised among transplanted Cape Bretoners and absorbed the music at an early age from her father, the local community, and visiting Cape Breton musicians. She spent childhood summers on Cape Breton Island and played with many of the Islands most noted fiddlers. It's a real treat to play fiddle while being accompanied by such an accomplished and energetic pianist!
The workshop is open to fiddlers of all levels
