Event
the Plant & Sing Festival 2012
Each October at the Plant & Sing Festival at Sylvester Manor on Shelter Island, NY, people gather to plant garlic and harvest fall crops, transforming the fields and the work itself with festive songs, dances, recitations and meals. It's the community harvest festival tradition made new, preserving old traditions and exploring how to create a new culture of food that is joyful, alive with people, and rooted in place.
This year, we're excited to have BELA FLECK headline our musical portion of the event on Saturday, the 6th, which will also include performances by The SUN PARADE, the GAWLER FAMILY, VELOCIPEDE, DUNEGRASS, LILY AND THE TIGERS, ISLAND FOLK, the WORKSONGERS, BRIAN DOLPHIN, FREE SEEDLINGS, and the WHODAT LOUNGERS. Saturday Night will conclude with a CONTRADANCE led by the Gawler Family.
Literary Events on Saturday will include: Michaela Muntean, Silvia Lehrer, Esther Freud, Cathy Lynch, Scott Chaskey, the Greenhorns, Christian McClean, Brad Davis, Megan Chaskey, Hal Ficket, Bill Burford, Margi Burford and Bill Persky.
Farm events will include a Film Screening by the Greenhorns, Garlic Shucking on Saturday Night, Garlic Planting on Sunday, and a Sweet Potato Harvest!
Wonderful food will be provided by Vendors and Chefs from over the East End, and Sunrise Yoga will be lead by Heidi Fokine on Sunday Morning.
