La Follia performs music featuring the exotic, beautiful sound of five violas da gamba, both solo and in ensemble. Included is Bach's sixth Brandenburg Concerto. Countertenor Ryland Angel joins the consort in a special guest appearance. A pre-concert lecture on gambas will be presented 15 minutes before curtain.
What do you get if you cross a cello and a guitar? They look like violins and cellos, but the instruments of the viola da gamba family are a completely different animal. The viola da gamba has been experiencing a rebirth in recent years thanks to the growing influence of early music, and superstar performers like Jordi Savall. La Follia will be featuring this unusual and beautiful instrument on a concert exploring the wealth and diversity of its music, and featuring the talents of Austin's wonderful local violists da gamba as well as visiting artists. Included are songs for viol consort, sung by countertenor Ryland Angel, as well as a performance of Bach's sixth Brandenburg Concerto, which features violas da gamba, violas, and cellos, with not a violin in sight! Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear this instrument strut its stuff.
