The Founding Father You Never Knew -- The Life, Times & Consequences of Joseph Preistly
Joseph Priestly (1734-1804) was a renegade British theologian, a maverick scientist, a political visionary, a mentor to the likes of Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. He stood at the epicenter of the 18th century revolutions that produced the modern world. Steven Johnson's engaging volume, The Invention of Air: A Story of Science, Faith, Revolution, and the Birth of America (New York, 2008), is a lively introduction to a man who surely should count as an American Founding Father.
This course will be a lively two-session conversation about Johnson's The Invention of Air. Please read chapters 1-3 before the first session, and note any especially telling passages you'd like to share.
The Invention of Air is available in paperback from your local independent bookseller, or on line.
Dick Miller, a frequent instructor who believes that fun can be learning, is Professor of History Emeritus at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and past President of Heritage Shared and the California Council for the Promotion of History.
Two sessions: Tuesdays, September 11 and September 18 2pm - 4pm
