KALA CAFE
KALA CAFÉ presents and evening of entertainment with a cabaret/variety style flair. Emcee Dinah Urell welcomes Performance Poet John Kulm and Showladies, the campy hip  hop funster duo of Andrea Mazzarella and Teresa Barnes, in addition to a few surprise guests.
Both artist acts are locally-based in the Columbia Pacific Region. John Kulm carved out a niche at poetry slams in Seattle's heady grunge days and was booked on tour with the genesis of the Lallapalooza Festival, billing as a "Cowboy Poet." Kulm is well-known in the region as an accomplished "funny guy," with many noted performances at the former River Theater in Astoria, where he introduced his humor/prose book, "The Five Stages of Quitting Farming,"  and as a regular host at the annual Fish Poets Gathering. Kulm will be introducing fresh new material from a soon-to-be released book casting humorous light on "Jungian stereo types!"
Andrea Mazzarella and Teresa Barnes have gained notoriety for their off-the-wall performances, colorful costumes, and colorful lyrics. Showladies, their current entertainment moniker, (aka Banana Hammer) draw inspiration from '90s R&B rap, and they say they   "wanted to fill a more Lady Gaga-ish niche in the region." Part parody, part camp, and part social commentary, Showladies rap on a constellation of topics, from wolves and wizarding to club hopping.  Also new for the act, they'll be introducing a  "folky," set.
True to the vintage variety show, Urell, a vocalist, entertains with a number or two. An intimate club setting is limited to 40 seats per night. Some cabaret table seating is available on a first come first serve basis. A no-host bar serves featured cocktails/beer and wine.
Doors open at 8:30pm, Show at 9pm, with a short intermission. KALA is located at 1017 Marine Drive in Astoria. 503.338.4878. Read about the show in this month's HIPFiSHmonthly at www.hipfishmonthly.com.
