Organ Recital Subscription includes: (10/24/12) Olivier Latry, Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris (1/23/13) John Scott, St. Thomas Church, New York (3/5/13) Jon Gillock, Paris, France Latry 10/24/12: Olivier Latry is one of the most celebrated and brilliant organists in the world today. His all-French program will display the full spectrum of French sonorities of Ascension's Quoirin organ, from the resplendent Baroque trompettes and bombardes of Marchand's Grand Dialogue in C to the rich Romantic timbres of Dupré's opening movement of his Symphonie Passion to the thrilling modern colors of Thierry Escaich's Evocation II. Finally, Latry will play the complete Symphonie V of Charles-Marie Widor, known throughout the world for its famous Toccata. Scott 1/23/13: We are delighted to welcome our neighbor from right up Fifth Avenue! John Scott is perhaps the most distinguished British organist of his generation, having served as Organist and Director of Music at St. Paul's Cathedral in London for many years and having played in virtually every important organ venue in Europe and the United States. He is also one of the few major organists equally at home with Early Music and with repertory from the 19th and 20th centuries. His program will therefore show the amazing eclectic range of The Manton Memorial Organ. The first half of the concert will feature major works of Bach and other Baroque composers played from the mechanical ("tracker-action") console, using the core Baroque stops of the instrument; then, after intermission, he will switch to the large electric-action console for a selection of Romantic works, revealing rich, symphonic sounds. Gillock 3/5/13: Olivier Messiaen Livre du Saint Sacrement Last season at Ascension, Messiaen expert Jon Gillock played the other summit of Messiaen's organ works, the Méditations sur le Mystère de la Sainte Trinité. The performance drew a deeply-moved capacity audience and critical acclaim. Gillock returns this March to play Messiaen's final and single greatest masterpiece for organ, his Book of the Holy Sacrament. Whereas the Méditations is a work of vast scope, austere mysticism, and awe, the Livre comes from the very last years of Messiaen's life when his compositional style became more simplified, direct, and even more profoundly spiritual. Quoting Gillock's book on Messiaen, the Livre du Saint Sacrement "is, I believe, Messiaen's most important work for organ: in its eighteen movements he explores a range of emotions, varieties of timbres, and a depth of expression that are unequaled in any of his other works." We will be providing Gillock's extensive program notes for this very special event.
