Midtown Dickens
Midtown Dickens is a forward-thinking folk band from Durham, North Carolina. Utilizing both traditional folk instruments, as well as more modern tools, the group attempts to tell contemporary stories in a vernacular form. The band injects old folk and bluegrass sounds with verve, quirkiness and modern ideas. After performing at Portland's Pickathon they will make at stop at the Arcata Playhouse on Tuesday, August 7 at 8 p.m. Their latest album, Home, contains 11 gorgeous meditations on the themes of home (both literal and abstracted), family (blood and chosen) and space (within us and about us) and is out now on Trekky Records. Home is Midtown Dickens' most collaborative release to date, expanding the core duo of songwriters/vocalists Kym Register and Catherine Edgerton to include multi-instrumentalists Will Hackney and Jonathan Henderson. Recorded between tours in a near-constant year of traveling (including jaunts with kindred-spirits The Mountain Goats, Megafaun, and Lost in the Trees) the album reveals a band moving effortlessly as one. This unity brings focus and warmth to Edgerton and Register's dark folk compositions.
