A Correct Likeness (presented by Leopold Group and Bread & Roses Productions)
Exploring the intersection of still photography and dance, "A Correct Likeness" is a dance installation/photography performance merger. The blending of fact with fiction in order to represent things strategically but recognizably, a project of early portrait painters in the years preceding the camera, exposes the similarities between the picture's frame and the stage's proscenium.
"A Correct Likeness" lives somewhere between capturing a moment, staging the moment of capture and the inevitable mediation of both of those tasks. The exquisitely athletic bodies of the dancers animate their photographic counterparts, just as the photographs expose the well-rehearsed spontaneity of the movements.
This dance/photography mash up is a jumping off point into complicated ontological questions about both fields. Hopefully you will leave with more questions than when you arrived (but also with a few glasses of wine enjoyed and some really striking movement memories and satisfying conversations).
We invite you to break all theater etiquette and experience the performance through your video camera, camera phone or telephoto lens (just please no flash). We ask only that you share your results with us on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/leopoldgroup), twitter (@leopoldgroup) or in a simple email (leopoldgroupdanceco@gmail.com). We would like to include any audience photography of the event as part of the second weekend of performances (with your permission of course).
