TOPIC: Plunger lift in high liquid volume wells in the Permian Basin
ABSTRACT: This presentation will address plunger lift successes in high liquid volume wells in the Permian Basin. Plunger lift was considered in an effort to transition high liquid volume wells from flowing to rod pump. Historically in the Permian Basin this was accomplished with high cost electric submersible pumps, gas lift or hydraulic lift. One of the criteria for success was that plunger lift would be able to economically maintain a wells production decline. The paper presented at the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course in Lubbock, Texas in 2015 shows the viability of plunger lift as a replacement for other costly lift choices and that it can be viewed as the preferred intermediate step between flowing and beam pump. Plunger lift can be used to bridge the gap between flowing and rod pump and reduce the lease operating expenses (LOE) compared to other lifting options.
SPEAKER: Mike Swihart formed PLSI 28 years ago as a one man operation that now employs over 50 people, and has been in the Permian Basin continuously during that time while other companies have come and gone. He is an acknowledged expert in the Permian Basin on plunger lift technology. He has installed plunger lift systems all over the United States as well as in South America. He has been instrumental in the recent advances of plunger lift in high liquid volume wells, where systems have lifted as much as 2000 barrels of fluid per day and saved operators millions of dollars in lifting costs. His paper on that technology was presented at the 2015 Texas Tech Southwest Petroleum Short Course in conjunction with COG, and updated at the 2016 Short Course. Mike taught an 8-hour class at Texas Tech for 10 years, from 1995 until 2005, and taught that class again at the Short Course in April of 2016. He has also instructed at Odessa College, Midland College and UTPB. Mike has an Associate Degree in Petroleum Technology and a BBA Degree in Finance from the University Of Texas McCombs School Of Business. Prior to forming PLSI, he worked for ARCO Oil & Gas for 10 years and Marathon Oil Company for 2 years. Mike is a 25 Year Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers.
