The Gaza Mono-Logues: An Adaptation in Five Voices
FROM PALESTINE TO PEÑASCO - THE GAZA MONO-LOGUES:

AN ADAPTATION IN 5 VOICES TELLS STORIES OF PALESTINIAN YOUTH LIVING UNDER OCCUPATION

The sound of life is louder than the roar of bombing and higher than the will of destruction and isolation, the Gaza Mono-Logues are a living expression of hope in the face of pain. -  Iman Aoun, Artistic Director, The Gaza Mono-Logues, Ashtar Theatre -         Ramallah 2010

Peñasco, NM  The Peñasco Theatre Collective (PTC) www.penascotheatre.org, a multi-ethnic, interdisciplinary and intergenerational artist collective in Northern New Mexico, is proud to present its newest production The Gaza Mono-Logues: An Adaptation in 5 Voices The physical theatre piece based on narratives authored by 31 Palestinian youth who survived the Israeli war on Gaza in 2009 is an inter-generational collaborative piece that incorporates dance, acrobatics, dramaturgy and visual art. This production will debut at the Peñasco Theatre on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at 7pm and Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 2pm.

The Gaza Mono-Logues: An Adaptation in 5 Voices is a bold, innovative production based on an amalgam of poignant observations by young people living under siege.  The monologues that were authored in 2010 by teenagers living in Gaza working in collaboration with the Gaza-and Ramallah-based Ashtar Theatre, position hopes, dreams, and resiliencies of young Palestinians at the center of the realities of Israeli occupation and war.

Through dance, acrobatics, dramaturgy, and visual art and accompanied by a compelling original score, an inter-generational   cast of Indigenous artists and artists of color gracefully articulate the stories of 31 Palestinian youth who survived the 2008-2009 bombing of Gaza in which over 1,400 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed by the Israeli military.  The performance seeks to break the isolation of Palestinian youth through storytelling, increase understanding of Palestinian experiences and provide opportunities to reflect on the human impact of U.S financial and policy support for the Israel.  The PTC is staging the production to encourage examination of all these issues and provide an outlet for New Mexican youth and their advocates to empower themselves through non-traditional creative expression.  We hope to inspire community members to advocate for Palestinian liberation though local action, said the productions director Rebekah Tarín,  and demand a reordering of U.S financial  priorities from endless global warfare to investing in quality of life initiatives that honor human life, support healthy  communities, families and the ecological survival of the planet. Daring to imagine a future that includes Palestinians' dreams in a present seeking to erase them is a powerful reminder of the resilient nature of tender hearts and that creative expression and performance can be a force for healing, transformation and re-humanization.

The Peñasco Theatre Collective (PTC) established in 2001 and based in Peñasco, New Mexico, is comprised of a revolving group of multi-ethnic, interdisciplinary and intergenerational artists that work in aerials, stiltwalking, tumbling, dance, puppetry, visual art and storytelling to inspire, transform and build community.  The PTC is housed in a 75-year old adobe theatre, the only solar- powered theatre in Northern New Mexico.  PTC artist-educators provide inspiring, creative experiences to local and regional youth and adults, collaborate with local and regional community-based arts organizations and schools, and host a self-directed artist-in-residency space.

Funding for this project generously provided by the Brabson Foundation.
